News from Kendal-Crosslands
Community Life Insights from Residents

The Sales & Marketing Team recently gathered with some residents from Kendal at Longwood and Crosslands to talk about community life, what mattered most to them, and the changes they have experienced while living in the Community. Our diverse group consisted of residents who have lived in our Life Plan Communities for many years, some who had moved in recently, and others who had lived in our 50+ communities of Coniston and Cartmel before joining our Life Plan Communities.
What Sets Kendal Crosslands Apart
When asked what makes Kendal~Crosslands Communities (KCC) different from other communities, unanimously, the resident’s association and committees are responsible for organizing social life and community activities was a difference noted by residents. Unlike other communities with an activities coordinator or extra fees for using art studios or the gym, the engaged lifestyle is part of the community at KCC.
Jim, who joined the community in 2022, remarked, “There’s something about it that’s like living in a small university town. People are bright and engaged, which is important for good psychological health- there’s always something going on and something to do.”
Diversity Valued
While some residents come from nearby Delaware, the greater Philadelphia area, and Chester County,
one of the interesting aspects of KCC is that it draws people from all over the country. Many people are attracted by the aspects that make Kendal Crosslands unique.
Nan has lived at Kendal Crosslands for 33 years. First, she lived at Cartmel and later moved to Crosslands. Before moving, Nan retired early and lived in Chicago. She thought she would be happy living in a place like her city’s high-rise condo. She and her husband had friends through the Delaware company duPont who were moving to Cartmel, so they came for a visit and fell in love. She and her husband lived at Cartmel for 17 years, and when her husband passed away, she continued living at Cartmel for 26 years. Then, to take advantage of the additional security of Lifecare as she ages, Nan decided to move to Crosslands. “The Sales & Marketing team made my move very simple. I was already active with people at Crosslands, so my transition was effortless.”
Jan and her husband, residents since 2016, had been living in Vermont and had looked at over 10 different Life Plan Communities before they found Cartmel. They found the perfect home there, and while they weren’t quite ready to fully move in, they commuted between their home in Vermont and Cartmel for a few years. They also recently transitioned to Crosslands into a cottage close to the community center, which will help as they age. They know that now that they are in their early 80s, their health may get more challenging over time.
Susan moved in 2012 and is a remarkable quilter. She recently helped make the Kendal 50th Anniversary quilt on display in the Kendal at Longwood Community Center. She talked about how her in-laws were not happy in another local community. Susan was fortunate that some space was available at Kendal at Longwood then. While her in-laws were not thrilled about another move, it was a very positive experience – so much so that Susan moved to Kendal at Longwood many years later.
